Genuine, full-grain and top-grain leather explained

These terms describe which layer of the hide is used and how much the surface is corrected. What matters most to a buyer is that the product is real leather, well finished, and honestly described.

The common terms

  • Full-grain: the outermost layer with the natural surface left intact. Most character, most visible variation.
  • Top-grain: the outer layer with the surface lightly sanded or corrected for a more uniform look.
  • Genuine leather: real animal leather, as opposed to synthetic or bonded materials. The term is also used in the trade for lower layers of the hide, so look at finishing as well as the label.
  • Bonded or PU 'leather': not real leather in the full sense; usually wears and peels sooner.

What to look at beyond the label

Check the edges (smooth and sealed, not raw or fraying), the stitching (even and tight), the hardware (solid, smooth zips) and whether the shape holds when the bag is set down.

What House of Azuro uses

Every House of Azuro piece is made of genuine calfskin leather, machine-stitched, with hand-finished edges, and is inspected individually before it is offered. The bags hold their shape when empty. Briefcases are lined in textile; the wallet and cardholders are leather inside and out. Every piece carries a 3-year warranty on workmanship and materials. Natural variation in grain and tone is expected.
