How a leather bag ages: patina and wear

Genuine leather darkens slightly, softens and gains a sheen on the most handled points over months of use. That patina is normal and is a large part of why leather is worth buying.

New leather is at its most uniform. With handling, light and time, the surface changes: handles and edges become smoother and slightly darker, creases form where the piece flexes, and the colour deepens.

Black and Brown age differently

Brown shows patina early and visibly. Black ages more quietly, mostly as a soft sheen on the edges.

Patina or damage?

Even darkening, softening and fine creases are patina. Cracking, peeling, deep stains and stitching that lifts are damage, usually from heat, moisture or harsh cleaners. Good care keeps you on the right side of that line.

Five years with the pieces

The founder of House of Azuro has carried the black Orsini, Bellini, Vieri and Dante for about five years. Over that time the leather has softened naturally, with no peeling or flaking, and the hardware and construction still work as they should.
